The Aftermath

What a storm it was. I recorded over 20" in Morristown and areas close to me got 24+.

I am actually snowed in, power lines and unplowed roads in my neighborhood ate blocking all access out...

The snow band that produced 3 to 4 inches per hour will go down in history...

I am calling this the Great Snow of 2018.

Stay tuned, we may have one more on tap next week!

  1. Hey Willy, my ruler-to-the-dirt test over several spots in the yard gave about 7 to 8 inches in U. Montclair. Seems out of line with other observations, but then again, this was dense, very wet snow, might be well less than 10 inches per liquid inch. We lost power and PSEG sez Saturday night, so this one is leaving a little taste of Sandy for us.

But hey, that thundersnow that I heard while walking through the proverbial feather-pillow-cut-open, that was something not to be forgotten either.

So is this enough for this winter, or do we have another coastal storm ejecting over the Carolina/Virginia line for Tuesday? Right now the GFS and Euro are kicking it out to sea, but that's what they seemed to do with the last 2 March Noreasters, when they were 5 days out. CMC presently thinks we get grazed by it, a few inches. NAO is trying to struggle back to neutral, but there could still be enough cold air around next week for some more fun.

I haven't checked the records, but it seems to me that over the past decade or so, when we have had big storms in Dec, Jan and Feb, March usually turned out quiet. But sometimes (not always), a quiet winter ended with a memorable March. Looks like that is the way that this one goes into the books! Jim G

  2. Good question Jim.

    Willy,

I live around the corner from where you did your reporting in Randolph. Felt like a celebrity was in town and told my wife I was venturing out to meet you if you did the update lol, especially since I follow your blog

Great forecasting and impressive reporting, you are a natural.

    1. Although you may call it the Great Snow of 2018, I will refer to it as Willy's Storm of 2018. You own this one friend.

    2. Haha thats funny. I always drive up to Casa de Pasta since that is one of the highest elevations I can find. I am glad you guys enjoy following. It has been a fun hobby over the last several years.

  3. Friday AM, I see that the forecasts and some of the models are now calling for 2 inches or so for Monday into Tuesday. And so it begins, once again . . . Noreaster III. One of those movies with lots of sequels, but when you watch a new one, you know that you've seen it before. Oh well, NE II probably pruned the weaker trees in my area, so there won't be too many more downed branches and limbs on Tuesday morning. I was lucky on Wednesday -- a tree branch came down in my yard, but missed my car! Jim G
