Friday: Its About to Feel Like Winter

Good morning. We have an active and news making cycle of weather to discuss as the region will be hit with a series of storms and major cold shots over the next 5 days. The storms will feature rain for most but the Mountains of New England will get their first significant snow accumulations in the upcoming period. For other areas, the headline will be the big cold shot(s) that will follow the storms.

Starting off, a low pressure system approaches the region later today causing rain to break out for most and mountain snows above 2000ft to start...

This quick hitting system will drop up to 6 inches in the highest peaks of the Northeast before  changeover to ice and rain. 

The big story however is the cold that follows tomorrow through Monday...

As the storm leaves tonight, air originating directly from the north pole will bleed into the region. When you wake up Saturday the wind will be blowing with temperatures dropping into the 30's. With the wind chill it will feel like its in the 20's Saturday for many areas. Low temperatures will drop into the 20's at night. Sunday will be less wind but almost as cold with temperatures in the lower 40's for our region for highs.

This will give everyone a reality check that winter is coming.

We then have another larger storm system thats going to approach the region on Tuesday. As I have been discussing all week, I think this second system is a snow maker for the interior. In fact, I think the mountains of New England see 6-12 inches with this system with snow also falling in lower elevations of the interior as well. The GFS model has been doing the best job with this imo...

The ski areas will be happy about this one. There is a chance a few fakes can also fly for areas closer to the coast on the back edge of this storm Wednesday but nothing that will accumulate. Regardless, the second arctic cold shot arrives in this storms wake Wednesday...

This colder air will bring temperatures back into the upper 30's and lower to mid 40's for the region middle of next week. The cold moderates but does stick around for next weekend.

We then should see a period of some moderation heading towards Thanksgiving week. This period could last around 2 weeks where we have normal temps. The real start of winter should then start as we enter December per my winter forecast. Just in time for my trip to Hawaii!
