No storm later this week as I mentioned last night. We will need to wait for high pressure over Greenland to before banking on any big storms. The reason is that high pressure over Greenland locks a trough over the eastern United States and locks in the cold air. As storms approach they are blocked from cutting inland or skirting out to sea. The image below is a simple explanation..
Now its no secret that we are dealing with a very snowless winter at this point. We finally got the cold temps but snow did not follow them. I know its easy to just say it will never snow this winter but I need to remind everyone that we still have half the month of Jan, all of Feb and half of March to go. If we finally get the correct pattern in place its game on.
Long term models are starting to finally hint at high pressure developing near Greenland..
Too early to tell if this will verify but we need to keep an eye on it.
In terms of temperatures, we do see a little warmup in the 5-10 day period. After that we can return to cold but the jury is still out on that as well as the stormy pattern.
So for snow lovers the waiting game continues. Lets hope we don't have to wait till 2016. Thanks for checking in.
