Wednesday Update: Miserable Weather is Over

Good morning. We just underwent a pretty depressing few days of weather. No one likes to see cold rainy days in mid May. In fact, the mountains of New England even saw snowfall from our last storm system! 

The good news is the next few days will return to more seasonable conditions. We will see mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the low 70s. There is the chance of some showers on Friday but nothing that will make the day a washout.

That will clear out by the evening paving the way for a nice weekend.

The reason the weather has been so stormy and cold has been due to a area of high pressure over Greenland. This is called a - NAO pattern. It causes the jet stream to buckle and storms to consolidate over the eastern 1/3. If this was the winter we would be gassing up the snowblower frequently. Since it is May we were left with a cold rain. You can see this pattern below...

In the long range there are finally hints showing up of a summer like warm up along the east. A ridge of high pressure may develop causing warm and humid air from the south to rise into the region towards the end of May...

This would bring summer weather into the area. We will have to keep a close eye on if this trend continues. I have a feeling it may be pushed off a little still.
